Ok, i'd really appreciate a little help from the UK zoners if you all wouldn't mind.
I'm headed to the UK in mid April and i'm wondering where i should go. I'm interested in music, history and especially war history. so if you have any ideas where i should go, could you please give me your thoughts.
thanks.

emperial war museum london, RAF Colingdale Hendon London, thats good that has everything from first world war flying tents to the b52 bomber. hmmm what else? music? well depends what you want and what is on of course. and it really depends on oother things you are interested in, there's plenty of places of history in the UK.

yes just to back up what lv has said really. both the imperial war museum and the RAF museum are fantastic if you enjoy those sorts of things. from memory the royal airforce museum even has a scud missile from the first golf war that you can feel.

in general london is a great place to visit though, loads of stuff to do and history everywhere. i'm not sure how you'd find out about such things, though a tourism center would be a good place to start i'd imagine! lol, but when i was at school we went on this really good tour around london that took us to seens of various famous murders! i'd imagine that you'd enjoy that sort of thing loui. a visit to the london dungeons would also be in order for you i think, i know how obsessed with torcher you are! hehehe.

I never been to London but if I were to go, one of the places I'd like to visit is (not sure if I said it right) Tower Bridge or the Tower of London? So much history there from what I've heard.

hmmm london isnt my favorite of places.

Post 9 by Perestroika (Her Swissness) on Thursday, 02-Mar-2006 3:46:03

oh, the types of music i like are mainly brittish folk music...i just love that style.

Post 10 by Goblin (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Thursday, 02-Mar-2006 9:14:45

Then you want to head to Dublin Southern Ireland where nearly every pub has live folk music. History, hmm well, there is Culloden field site of the last and disasterous Jacobite rising, in Scotland. Though judging by the weather its probably under 5 feet of snow.

Post 11 by Perestroika (Her Swissness) on Thursday, 02-Mar-2006 16:15:01

mmm snow...i love snow too, but it's spring in april, there should not be snow should there?

Post 12 by Goblin (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Friday, 03-Mar-2006 8:51:59

Yes there often is in March and as the wind is a vicous northeasterly from Scandinavia, its FREEZING!!. In fact we fully expect a good deal of snow tonight. The Dungeons in Edinburgh are worth a look, if your not easily scared, they have just added a new attraction..vampires I think. Also, there are the vaults of Mary Kings Close, remnants from the days of the plague, when the residents were walled up and left to die. They are haunted and quite atmospheric, the germs of the plague may still be down there lurking in the shadows.sinister gothic laugh

Post 13 by Perestroika (Her Swissness) on Friday, 03-Mar-2006 16:08:39

oooooo, wow, i have to go there! that sounds interesting...hmmmm, i wonder if i'm a little sick in the head?

No not at all the Edinburgh Vaults are a huge attraction its a tangible to connect with the past...if your not clostraphobic.

Glencoe is worth a visit to hear about the terrible massacre of the MacDonalds by the Campbells.

Tower of london is a bit of a let down for blindies really I'm afraid. Most exhibits are under glass, and it's highly unlikely that they'll get them out for you to feel. As a brilliant alternative however, I'd reccomend Warwick Castle, nearest train station Lemmington Spa. They're really excelent there, and you can handle most things, especially if they know you're coming in advance. I love that place! The London Dunjons will be a good experience, but it's highly commercialised to be honest. You should certainly check out Madam To Swords or however you spell it, while you're here, because you'll be able to grope up all kinds of famous people! It's a waxworks museum, and you can feel passed king's, Queen's, movie and music stars etc. Again, there's no problem with touching the exhibits, and To Swords is free for blindies as well. RAF Duxford near Cambridge is pretty cool - I think they have the first Concord there, and some flight simulators that pro pilets use for training, so you can fly a Jumbo jet if I remember rightly. There are also many famous caves around, the high wickham caves for example, which are associated with witches and dark magic etc. Lots of places like that. Many many haunted pubs, old houses etc. There are also some maritime museums in Portsmouth, where you can see some of the really old war ships etc. I think they might even have a convict ship there, so that'll interest an Aussi! LOL! Only kidding! Winzewr Castle might interest you, but I wouldn't bother with Buckingham Palace really, most of that is behind ropes, and they don't let you handle much. There's another castle in Derbyshire called Chatsworth I think. Down in the Southwest, Cornwall and Devern, there are plenty of old mines you can visit, as well as lighthouses and old smugglers routes etc. And if you're into mysterious things, you really must visit Stone Henge. There are also some amazing Cathedrals. Check out Canterbery Cathedral, where Thomas Becket got his head chopped off. The whole Chorser Canterbery tales thing is around there as well.

Hope that helps,

Matt

There is a disconcerting story concerning the waxwork of Hitler, his hair grows and the museum staff who look after his figure, have to trim it every so often. I'd love to see them when he's goose stepping down the Mall.

Post 20 by Manwe (The Dark Lord) on Monday, 06-Mar-2006 11:29:37

stone henge was good but because of the damage inflicted upon the monument, nobody can now go inside the circle of stones. i was lucky enough to go but that was a good 10 years ago now. these days you simply cant get near to it.

Post 21 by Perestroika (Her Swissness) on Monday, 06-Mar-2006 13:25:39

um...goblin, that's just wrong. iiew! i don't want to think about that!
and lv, how close can you actually get to it?

Post 22 by Goblin (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Tuesday, 07-Mar-2006 6:09:04

Post 23 by Perestroika (Her Swissness) on Tuesday, 07-Mar-2006 16:52:25

Post 24 by Goblin (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Thursday, 09-Mar-2006 6:48:34

Hmm hmm he gives the museum staff the creeps even as a waxwork, he has incredible presence.

exactly how long ar you in the UK for? I ask as london and Scotland are a fair way apart. scotland's an overnight journey on a train, or if you fly, it's about an hour or so from one to the other, I think.

Post 26 by Perestroika (Her Swissness) on Friday, 10-Mar-2006 2:06:46

i'm only in the UK for 2 weeks, not long i know, but it's all i have.

Post 27 by Big Pawed Bear (letting his paws be his guide.) on Friday, 10-Mar-2006 8:25:20

it might be a good idea then to list what you most want to see and plan your visit a little. I know in comparison to America we're a tiny island nation, but you do need to plan a little if you want to visit many places which are far apart.

Tiny!? Speak for yourself mate, and as far as this supposed vast distance between Scotland and england, we are hardly talking about the incredible distance of 100 miles between nieghbours as is the norm in the Aussie outback..

Post 30 by Perestroika (Her Swissness) on Friday, 10-Mar-2006 10:37:47

lol...we have so much land and we hardly use it, i think we only have 7 people per square mile, compared to american states sometimes having 70. i actually think we may have less. lol...anyone want some desert?

Post 31 by Manwe (The Dark Lord) on Friday, 10-Mar-2006 13:28:29

hmmm how close, well you wouldn't be able to touch it, that's for certain, in my opinion the closest you would see is the windows xp wall paper it's taped up and to well protected now. not worth your visiting.

Post 32 by Goblin (I have proven to myself and the world that I need mental help) on Tuesday, 14-Mar-2006 9:43:20

I'll have 200 miles minus the snakes.
